Course Description
This course requires the Participant to read and understand the attached article concerning the engagement of families in case planning. Successfully involving family members in case planning leads to a number of beneficial effects for children and families involved child welfare practices. Caseworkers and agencies can utilize a number of techniques to improve engagement of families in case planning, ranging from large-scale policy changes to simple daily practices and attitudes.
In Engaging Families in Case Planning, Participants will first consider basic principles of engaging families in case planning. Next, Participants will become familiar with the following caseworker strategies that support family engagement in case planning: using supportive behaviors; visualizing and describing the family system; instituting family teaming models; incorporating family finding; employing the solution-based casework approach; and integrating structured decision-making and signs of safety. Additionally, Participants will learn about agency strategies that support family engagement in case planning. Also, Participants will analyze findings in the Child and Family Services Reviews (CFSRs) concerning challenges and strategies to enhance family involvement. Finally, Participants will conclude by examining the following examples of how jurisdictions are implementing strategies to engage families in case planning: Texas Department of Family and Protective Services: Family Group Decision-Making; Fairfax County (VA) Department of Family Services: Family Partnership Program; and New York Agency Using SBC to Achieve Family-Driven Case Planning.
This course is intended to provide child welfare professionals, mental health professionals and social workers with fundamental aspects of engaging families in case planning.

Requirements
You will be expected to review all materials provided and pass the poset-test with a minimum of 70%, in order to receive your certificate of completion. You will also be required to complete a course evaluation. Once you have satisfactorily completed the post-test and submitted your evaluation, your certificate will be emailed to you.
