Course Description
This course requires the Participant to read and understand the attached quick guide pertaining to the specific behavioral health treatment needs of men with substance use disorders (SUDs). This guide is based entirely on Addressing the Specific Behavioral Health Needs of Men, Number 56 in the Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) series.
In Tip 56, Addressing the Specific Behavioral Health Needs of Men: Quick Guide for Clinicians, Participants will begin by exploring important issues such as: how masculinity shapes men’s attitudes, beliefs and behaviors; how culture affects definitions of masculinity; and how masculine roles may hinder some men from seeking needed treatment for behavioral health concerns. Next, Participants will learn some basic differences between men and women patterns of substance use/abuse. Additionally, Participants will consider the unique difficulties men may present for screening and assessment. Also, Participants will become familiar with the treatment issues involved when working with men. Next, Participants will be able to identify the treatment issues involved when working with specific populations of men. Finally, Participants will consider the available treatment modalities and settings.
This course is intended to familiarize mental health professionals, social workers, substance abuse professionals, child welfare workers, healthcare professionals, psychologists, or certified addiction specialists, with the specific behavioral health treatment needs of men with substance use disorders (SUDs).
