Course Description
This course requires the Participant to read and understand the attached article pertaining to SAMHSA’s framework for trauma and a trauma-informed approach. Trauma is a global public health issue that occurs as a result of violence, abuse, neglect, disaster, war and other emotionally harmful experiences. Recognizing the importance of this issue, SAMHSA has created a framework for trauma and a trauma-informed approach for the behavioral health sectors, which can be utilized in a variety of other settings that have the potential to either ease or exacerbate an individual’s capacity to cope with traumatic experiences.
In SAMHSA’s Concept of Trauma and Guidance for a Trauma-Informed Approach, Participants will understand SAMHSA’s purpose and methodology in developing a framework for trauma and a trauma-informed approach. Additionally, Participants will become familiar with the historical background of traumatic stress in the mental health field. Next, Participants will learn about SAMHSA’s concept of trauma by addressing the three “Es” of trauma: event(s), experience of event(s), and effect. Also, Participants will study SAMHSA’s trauma-informed approach that is grounded in a set of four assumptions and six key principles. Next, Participants will explore SAMHSA’s recommendations for implementing a trauma-informed approach through its ten implementation domains. Finally, Participants will conclude by briefly considering trauma in the context of community.
This course is intended to familiarize mental health professionals, social workers, substance abuse professionals, child welfare workers, healthcare professionals, psychologists, or certified addiction specialists, with SAMHSA’s concept of trauma and a trauma-informed approach.
