Course Description
This course requires the Participant to read and understand the attached article pertaining to neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). Neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) refers to a constellation of signs in the newborn due to substance or medication withdrawal. The Participant will understand how and why opioid use and dependence during pregnancy continues to be a significant health problem. Additionally, Participants will consider the guidelines for management of opioid-exposed newborns at Vermont Children’s Hospital at Fletcher Allen Health Care.
In Management of Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal, Participants will gain general knowledge about how opioid use and dependence during pregnancy gravely affects the developing fetus. Participants will also explore the guidelines for management of opioid-exposed newborns at Vermont Children’s Hospital at Fletcher Allen Health Care.
This course is designed to provide comprehensive information for the management of the opioid exposed newborn to mental health professionals, social workers, substance abuse professionals, child welfare workers, healthcare professionals, psychologists, or certified addiction specialists.

Requirements
You will be expected to review all materials provided and pass the poset-test with a minimum of 70%, in order to receive your certificate of completion. You will also be required to complete a course evaluation. Once you have satisfactorily completed the post-test and submitted your evaluation, your certificate will be emailed to you.
